Freshwater Aquarium Fish Type Compatibility

Before finally setting up a freshwater aquarium and you want to have a community of fishes, you need to come up with a list from the very abundant freshwater aquarium fish types. You need to consider several attributes in order to come up with a reasonable and compatible list of fishes.

Compatibility would mean that these fishes can live together harmoniously inside the tank. You should avoid types that go against each other so that you can also avoid injuries and damages in the tank. Some fishes have the tendency to be more playful than others and will have the possibility of nipping after tails of the other fishes. A male Betta for example will most likely be aggressive towards another male Betta. This means that you need to research about the behavior of the fishes you are leaning towards getting.

Another consideration for compatibility is the eating behavior. This varies from different freshwater aquarium fish types. Some are omnivorous, some are carnivorous, and some are bottom-dwellers. This means you also have to vary the kind of food you will provide so to ensure that they all eat if you end up putting together fishes with different eating behavior. This also comes with their size. Surely, you can’t put together two different types of carnivorous fish with different sizes. For example, you can not place a 4-inch Oscar with a lot smaller Pacu. You might just wonder why your Pacu suddenly vanished.

Some fishes want to establish territory and tend to become protective of “their” territory. Even if they do not normally get aggressive towards this other particular kind of fish but since they were place in the tank first, when you place the new kind, the first ones suddenly become attackers. In cases like this, it is ideal to have them placed in the tank together at almost the same time. That way, they get easily used to having the other kind around.

It is wise to do some research first before starting anything. Through this, the experience would be less tedious and less confusing for the hobbyist. It may even lead to less expense; less expense for buying new fish because death can be avoided, less expense in buying solutions and treatments for injuries, and less expense in setting up.
