1. Do not be in a hurry. You do not need to immediately set up your fish tank and introduce fish into them. Once you get an aquarium home, you need to get the nitrogen cycle established which normally takes a couple of weeks. Aquariums need the good bacteria going which help in neutralizing toxins from fish waste and decaying plants. It you are feeling impatient and really want to get the aquarium going, take water from an older aquarium, your fish tank seller can supply you with it, or buy an aquarium starter kit.
2. Do not think that small is good. This is a common misconception. Larger fish tanks are easier to clean; have more water and needs less maintenance. Besides if you are making a mistake, it’s easily visible. You may miss out on checking if the fish are doing poorly in a small and overcrowded aquarium. A beginner could start with a 25 to 30 gallon fish tank, which is still on the smaller side, but is easier to maintain.
3. Cleaning the fish tank filter in hot water or using cleaners on them. This will kill the good bacteria and make the filter ineffective. Moreover do not dry the filter thoroughly before putting it back in. Clean the filter with normal tap water at room temperature, and put it back when still wet, and even if it has a bit of dirt on it, it is okay.
4. Do not over feed the fish. Fish beg for food any time a person approaches their tank. They are not hungry all the time. Just feed them twice a day and only as much as they can eat in a couple of minutes. More will kill them.
5. Your fish have may be having a disease. Check carefully. Do they have spots on them or some fluffy fungus like growth? Are they floating around but not swimming? If so, you need to contact your pet shop for medicine.
6. If your fish is dying and you have done everything right, may be it is time you cleaned out the water. Change half the water with fresh water, making sure that you have used dechlorinator to neutralize the chlorine.
